"Put yourself in a state of mind where you say to yourself, 'Here is an opportunity for me to celebrate
like never before, my own power, my own ability to get myself to do whatever is necessary'." -Martin
Luther King
For many the acknowledgement that their life has spiraled down to the point of becoming homeless is devastating
and not an easy truth to face. This acknowledgement takes courage and being aware that doing nothing is actually
supporting the problem and allowing it to grow. For many, the thought of not being in complete control of their life
and emotion and the ability to maintain an awareness to recognize opportunities and take immediate action so
they can capitalize on them is not possible. Many sell themselves short.
Our challenge here at the Emmaus Shelter is to meet with each individual and family and list the
challenges/obstacles they are facing in order to achieve their goal of becoming whole again. We attempt to think
of new, positive behaviors to improve the way their challenges can be met and to assist them in creating
innovative and successful plans toward these improvements.
We know that achieving these objectives is determined by the individual's frame of mind. If the mind and thoughts
are positive, he or she will be in a position to seize the opportunities that are before them. We can only show the
path; they have to walk it! Listed below are only a few of the situations with which we are currently working:
- Grandparents with their beautiful 5 month-old grandchild
- A chronic homeless young man who is unable to find stability in his life
- An alcoholic man living in the woods who refuses detox and therefore unable to come into the shelter
- Parents with four children who lost their apartment due to a job loss
Sincerely,
Sister Lucille MacDonald, Director
